Architect: McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture
Location: Raleigh, NC
Converging an awkward entry lobby with a cramped, underutilized satellite library, this renovation creates a lively open learning commons for NC State University’s College of Natural Resources. Responding also to a need for food service in this remote part of campus, the architects recognized an opportunity to create a destination venue for the many earth sciences departments housed in this massive 5-story building. Walls were removed, replaced with seating modulated by dual library and food kiosks. Vertical wood slat detailing, a wood ceiling over the kiosks and a palette of blues and greens subtly recall forests, water and sky.
