Conservation of the environment, including local plants, animals, and their habitats, is the focus of the Onslow County Environmental Education Center and Public Library. The 90 acre site was bequeathed to the county by the Audubon Society, with the intent that the land be protected in perpetuity and serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving the local ecology. The main building, boardwalks, outdoor classroom, and exterior exhibits make a minimal impact on this delicate wetland site, touching the earth lightly, while immersing patrons in the serenity of the natural surroundings.
