This is both a comprehensive arts district master plan and a building proposal for the redevelopment of the existing Carrboro ArtsCenter. The proposed five-story, $24 million project will include a 250-seat performance hall; a 80-seat black box theater; a 70-seat multi-purpose auditorium; an exterior amphitheater; rehearsal spaces; classrooms for instruction in sculpture, ceramics and painting; exhibition space; a broadcast studio and an incubator for entrepreneurs and artists. The ground floor will house Kidzu, an interactive museum and learning space for children. Conceived as an expressive lattice of interlocking volumes, the building is skillfully nested within a highly constrained urban site.
