Hamlet North Carolina’s historic 1920 Buttercup Ice Cream factory was rehabilitated to function as an antique vehicle museum with its principal exhibit being the historic model of the “Tornado,” the first steam locomotive in our State. The “Tornado Building,” is part of the Hamlet Depot and Museum complex that has been the impetus for the revitalization of downtown Hamlet. It also houses exhibits including Model A and Model T Ford automobiles, historic fire engines, and a model railroad. The structure was rehabilitated in accordance with The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
