This is an arts district master plan and a building proposal for the redevelopment of the Carrboro ArtsCenter. The five-story, $24 million project will include a 250-seat performance hall; a black box theater; a multi-purpose auditorium; an exterior amphitheater; classrooms for instruction in sculpture, ceramics and painting; exhibition space; a broadcast studio and an incubator for entrepreneurs. The ground floor will house Kidzu, an interactive museum for children. Conceived as an expressive lattice of interlocking volumes, the building is skillfully nested within a highly constrained urban site. Adjoining development will include retail space, a branch library and a boutique hotel.
