Architect: Carlton Edwards
Location: Asheville, NC
This residential project is located within a planned mountaintop community just outside downtown Asheville.
The site is approximately 2 acres in size and is situated on a protected ridge.
Generally, the slopes on the property are moderate and accommodating. The site in its natural condition was sparsely wooded, primarily with a stand of blighted ash trees and scattered pockets of rhododendron and mountain laurel.
To make the most of the generous views, the structure wraps around the mountain face to gather roughly 270 degree views. The living spaces are expressed with the larger building forms and are fit together to follow along the same contour as it curves around the site. Smaller, flat roofed forms act as connective tissue tethering the larger elements and providing for circulation and service oriented uses.
The aesthetic of the house is a warm, modern expression that blends well with both nature and the surrounding homes. The planned community has limiting design guidelines that point toward a more provincial mountain or European styling.
