Camp Kanata is a 150-acre camp site operated by the YMCA of the Triangle. It serves as a day and overnight camp which can accommodate several hundred children at any given time. The existing dining hall and associated kitchen serving the camp were undersized, outdated and required replacement. Upon investigation, it became apparent that the location of the new facility would best serve the camp if it maintained the central location of the existing building. The natural grade of the site drops off steeply to the south of the dining hall. Because the new building has a considerably larger footprint, it became necessary to creatively engage the adjacent slope which runs the length of the south facing elevation. In response, the south patio transitions into a terraced outdoor theater which can host meetings, performances, and other camp functions.
