This design for a full-block in downtown DC was influenced by the city’s L’Enfant masterplan and the site’s unique geometry. Oblique intersections contribute to an eye-level urban experience while corner spaces and roof terraces offer views back to the city. The program conforms to the triangular site by means of a dual-core L-shaped layout. The resulting void led to an atrium that allows sunlight to penetrate the deep footprint while also marking the entry along Mass Ave. Inside the lobby, the undulating wood ceiling, travertine walls, and soft forms of the sculptures merge to contrast with the sharp exterior.
