Duke University’s Department of Population Health Sciences is a new department in the School of Medicine. The departments research on patient care and illnesses enables them to notice changes and compare Duke patients to global trends in healthcare which inform Duke clinicians of things affecting patient care. As a growing department who needed space, they found the Imperial Building in the Innovation District, which recently received historic status. The design showcases this by keeping the arched windows, exposed brick walls, original hardwood floors and wood trusses while dropping modern boxes inside the space that blend the old and new.
