Location: 308 Research Drive, Durham NC 27708
This 11,000 SF renovation transformed an outmoded basement mechanical room into a light-filled, creative, and collaborative workspace for a university brain research institute. The entry to the re-imagined space is a striking glass cube at ground level which houses an elevator and serves as a light shaft to illuminate the underground facility. A distinctive vertical wood element at the glass cube entry transitions into a ceiling for the space below, subtly leading visitors in and through to a central open gathering area. The multidisciplinary program includes collision/team space, wet labs, flexible education space, and administrative offices.
