The Blue Ridge Escarpment Gorges in the Blue Ridge Mountains rise dramatically above the adjacent piedmont to nearly 4000 feet, shaping weather patterns and creating a temperate rain forest. While reflecting rich Appalachian culture, this 8600 square foot visitor center evolved from the escarpment, its waterfalls, and rhododendron forests. Spectacular views, optimal solar orientation, and abundant rainwater collection lend the building and exhibits their form. Visitor center orientation takes advantage of long-range park views and shifts at a cast-in-place concrete knuckle with the changing view. The center features museum-quality exhibits, a teaching auditorium and classroom, retail space, and ranger offices.
