Location: Durham, NC
Description:
The Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden in Duke University’s Sarah P. Duke Gardens inspires learning about the environment and the origins of our food. Visitors young and old are taught hands-on about sustainable gardening, nutrition, and healthy food systems. The program of four built elements - an ntry shade structure, a sculptural entry pergola, a trellis, and a relocated and reintegrated structure built from two vintage Wilson county tobacco barns as an outdoor classroom - gives a home and backdrop to learning about food production. The project honors North Carolina’s agrarian heritage, and literally brings the state’s tobacco past forward into Durham’s modern foodie-focused culture.
