Description:
A socially and politically active congregation decides to build, raising questions of purpose and place. How could their building express their ambitious missions and community outreach? As they nurture community, how will they conserve resources? The 10,000-square-foot expansion reflects and resolves the conflicts. Existing building walls and below-grade construction temper large spaces while making a podium for a freestanding chapel. This new worship space, surrounded by green roof and terraces, anchors an outdoor plaza that gently ramps up to provide on-grade access to the original sanctuary, while cisterns beneath the terrace capture rainwater for the gardens and 20 geothermal wells heat and cool all the new spaces. ity outreach and.
