Architect: Robert Thomas - Vines Architecture
Location: Lake Burt, Michigan
Description:
This Northern Michigan lake house was designed for a small family as weekend retreat. Located on a sloping, wooded site, the cabin is composed of three levels to minimize the building’s footprint and energy use, and to encourage outdoor living. One enters the home via bridge on the intermediate level. The ground level below opens to a large, partially covered deck, which serves as an outdoor living room for the cabin. The main living space is located on the third level. Treated as a large, open volume, this space contains a bedroom, bath, kitchen, and living/dining area. The roof of the cabin is shaped to enhance the lake views to the south, and to collect rainwater in a cistern at the rear. Using only local materials, the interior is lined with birch plywood and stone, while the exterior is clad with a silvered red cedar slat rain screen system.
