Architect: Clark Nexsen
Location: Raleigh, North Carolina
Description:
Owned by the State of North Carolina, the Green Square Parking Deck attempts to contribute to the urban fabric of downtown Raleigh by simultaneously creating a sense of enclosure and transparency. Vertical solar blades provide a sense of enclosure while also allowing air and light into the parking areas. Transparent glass stair towers announce vertical circulation. Horizontal canopies indicate vehicular and pedestrian access to and from the deck. The pedestrian experience is enhanced by long overhangs, a covered bench at the corner bus stop and transparent stair towers with views of downtown Raleigh. Sustainable measures include: photo-voltaic roof panels, a rainwater collection cistern, LED lighting, natural ventilation, covered bicycle parking and high-recycled content materials: concrete, steel and aluminum.
