Architect: The Raleigh Architecture Co.
Location: Raleigh, NC
Description:
The Coyle-Johnston Residence is located on a thoroughfare in the reenergized but historic residential community of Hungry Neck, Raleigh. Previously vacant, the narrow downtown infill lot is half of a variance-required subdivision. Form and materials intentionally recall contextual elements including a front porch and a facade of slate roof shingles salvaged nearby. Consolidating the mudroom, utilities, powder room and stair allow for a linear, open plan. Designed in tandem with the adjacent house, recesses in each house maximize and define limited outdoor space. Upper clerestories provide light and privacy, while a continuous perpendicular light-well illuminates the middle of the house.
**can be awarded as one with Dasgupta-Saucier Residence if jury sees fit.
