The Blue Ridge Escarpment Gorges in the Blue Ridge Mountains rise dramatically above the adjacent piedmont to nearly 4000 feet, shaping weather patterns and creating a temperate rain forest. While reflecting rich Appalachian culture, this 8600 square foot visitor center evolved from the escarpment and its waterfalls and rhododendron forests. The center features museum-quality exhibits, a teaching auditorium and classroom, retail, and ranger offices. Spectacular views, optimal solar orientation, and abundant rainwater collection lend the building its form. Ninety inches of annual rainfall are collected and used throughout the building and its exhibits.
