Carnes Crossroads Barn
Summerville, South Carolina
Stubbs Muldrow Herin architects
When land was cleared for a master planned community anticipated to become home to 15,000 residents, a 1929 horse-racing barn remained, but served no modern day function. Instead of tearing it down, developers saw the barn as an opportunity to celebrate the site's history and rural tradition. It was relocated to a prominent location at the neighborhood's entrance and repurposed as an open-air community venue. Efforts to maintain as much of the original structure and character as possible helped elevate this once-forgotten barn into the heart of a community and gives residents a sense of history in this new neighborhood.
