Gadsden Community Center is situated in an open field on and existing flat park site necessitating bold design moves to gain prominence on the site and serve as an inspiring backdrop to the adjacent school playfields. Affectionately dubbed the “folded airplane”, the building features a single folded roof that rises along the ridgeline which demarks the entry into the park. Other design elements included the introduction of corrugated metal, smooth fiber cement panels, and bold color accents that stray from a standard utilitarian design concept often seen in Richland County Recreation Commission public facilities.
