This medical center’s master plan suggested relocating the central energy plant, kitchen, laundry and loading dock to accommodate a new ICU facility. The architect’s solution saved $65 million by leaving those components in place, and constructing a facility supported by a series of 16 foot deep trusses spanning those existing functions, allowing them to remain in operation.
The curved plan enhances views of the rooms from the central nurse station. A perimeter corridor for families separates public circulation from staff support areas. Family waiting areas at the ends reflect the inverted arch motif of the original 1970’s building.
